The Good, The Bad & The Beautiful: May 2017

May just came and went, didn’t it? Well, to celebrate the arrival of June (and being a step closer to summer) I have decided to launch a new monthly feature: The Good, The Bad & The Beautiful. Thanks so much for joining me for the first one. GBB will be a great opportunity for you to see some of the products I’ve used throughout the month. Wondering how a Glossybox product or my latest impulse beauty buy ended up working out for me? Check GBB. Want to see what products I’ve used up and plan on rebuying? Check GBB. Curious what my tried and true beauty secrets are? Check GBB. I’m sure you get the point.

I used so many great things this month. Some were old favorites, while others were brand spanking new. Most of the products were amazing, but some are on the way to the local dump as we speak. Out of the items that were completely new to me, my top favorites were all related to skincare. I would have loved to include them here, but I decided that it may be better to do a separate feature sharing my current day and nighttime skincare routine (Keep on the lookout for that in June or July!).

Sauve Essentials

Body Wash (in Ocean Breeze and Wild Cherry Blossom)

I’ve showered with Bath and Body Works’ shower gels for as long as I can remember. I’d occasionally switch it up with my favorite bar soap or one of Molton Brown’s gels, but I was pretty loyal to B&BW—until recently. You may be asking what happened. Why did I cheat on them? I honestly became tired of their fragrances. The last few bottles I purchased had scents that were a little lackluster, so I was ready for a change. I ended up trying out Suave on a complete whim and I was completely blown away by their delightful fragrances.

As you can see above, I completely annihilated the bottle of Wild Cherry Blossom and I’m well on my way to doing the same to Ocean Breeze. Their bottles say that consumers found these scents to be as appealing as or preferred over the scents at B&BW. I have to fully agree with these findings. I actually preferred both scents over anything at B&BW. My favorite scent is easily Ocean Breeze. Wild Cherry Blossom is a really nice floral, but Ocean Breeze is right up my alley. It’s fresh, clean and reminds me of ocean air and sunshine.

As for the formula, I think it’s really good. The fragrance is reasonably long lasting, which I love. My skin feels nice and soft after my showers. I haven’t found it to be drying either. If you are like me and enjoy a gel that creates a lot of suds, this is the body wash for you. I never have to wonder if I have enough lather!

Head & Shoulders

2 in 1 Shampoo & Conditioner (Smooth & Silky Formula)

Ugh. Just ugh. Okay, so if you’ve been on the site before, you have more than likely read about my new love for Head and Shoulders’ reformulation of their Smooth and Silky shampoo and conditioner. If you happen to be new here…hey! How are ya? Anyway, I talked about these products here and also over here—in case you missed it.

After running out of my original samples, I had to look high and low for the full-sized bottles. You would not believe how hard it was for me to find a local store that carried the new formula opposed to the old one. I ended up having to order it online, but even that was an initial disaster (the bottle shattered in transit, soaked the box and had to be refused upon delivery). I ended up getting a replacement order, but I had to wait for it yet again. By the time I got it, I was so excited. I just knew my hair was going to be flawless once more.

I knew wrong. I made the dumb mistake of “experimenting” with a huge bottle of the 2 in 1 version of Smooth and Silky. Major fail. OMG, you guys—do not buy the 2 in 1 formula expecting to get the same amazing results I previously talked about. I could not stand this product. Okay, maybe it wasn’t the worst stuff I’ve ever plopped onto my head, but it was a pretty disappointing experience in comparison to when I used the separate products. My hair was right back at it with the tangling and was an absolute pain in my backside the entire time. If it hadn’t been for my usual conditioner and whatever I had left in the sample bottle I would have had a serious struggle on my hands. Let’s not even talk about the hair that would have perished in battle.

I typically like to comb and detangle my hair in the shower while it still has water and conditioner in it, but that was impossible to achieve with this product. There was no slip to the hair due to the shampoo and conditioner duo making it rather stiff and unmanageable. I’ve always had good reason to dislike shampoos with conditioner added in—they never work as well! Here I was trying to “save time” by getting the 2 in 1 when I knew full well I’d probably hate it. I should have taken the first busted bottle as a sign to simply settle for the two separate bottles. *sob*

Bottom line: If you want to see a miracle, buy two separate bottles of the shampoo and conditioner. If you want to be a tangly-haired fool (like myself), get the 2 in 1. But friends don’t let friends (or complete strangers) buy 2 in 1 shampoos, so just say no.

You’ve been warned. 😛

Spa To You

Deep Pore Cleansing Facial Brush and Massager

If you joined me for my May Glossybox unboxing you may remember this little guy. I’ve been using this facial brush each and every morning with my favorite cleanser. I still love it! The bristles aren’t shedding all over the place, so it’s shaping up to be a well made product.

I’ve been loving how my face looks and feels after using this. My usual exfoliating scrub has barely gotten any use since this brush came on the scene. I’ve enjoyed smooth,  breakout-free skin all month, so this has been helping me remove lingering traces of makeup, oils, etc. I definitely recommend this to anyone who doesn’t want to spend the money on a spin brush.

Bath & Body Works

Fine Fragrance Mist (in Moonlight Path)

Despite being over B&BW’s shower gels, I still really like some of their other offerings. I will probably always buy their body sprays since I use them so much and they fit perfectly into my typical routine. After a shower I spritz my entire body with one of their fragrance mists. This month, I was obsessed with Moonlight Path. I’ve always favored this particular scent, but I had temporarily forgotten about it after moving on to one of my many other scents (I had a huge stockpile of these sprays at one point). I finally rotated back to it and I’m so glad I did!

With hints of lavender and jasmine, this is the perfect nighttime spray (I use it all times of day though). It’s soft, fresh and powdery, which is why I find it ideal for after a shower. I like layering my perfume of the day on top of this, so I’ve found that this fragrance mist pairs really well with a wide range of other scents. There is one specific perfume that is a perfect companion scent, but I’ll have to share that with you next month!

Of course, if you went to B&BW today looking for this scent, it wouldn’t be in a bottle like the ones above. My bottles are so old—I have no idea when I even bought them. However, they have preserved perfectly. There isn’t a single hint of breakdown or alcohol when I use them. That being said, these are great to stock up on during sales because you can safely keep them around for whenever you need them.

TRESemmé

Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Leave-In Spray

This has to be one of the best hair styling products I’ve ever tried. I don’t need to use much of anything to style my hair anymore, but this stuff is a definite keeper. I first discovered this two summers ago. I used it all the time back then because I was wearing my hair straight and needed constant protection from my blow dryer and flat iron. I stopped using it when I wasn’t heat styling as much and completely forgot about how much I liked it. I decided to bust it back out since I’m resurrecting my bone straight look and I’m falling in love all over again.

If you blow dry your hair, you need this.

If you flat iron your hair, you need this.

If you curl your hair, you need this.

Heat protection is extremely important. This is especially true if you have colored, bleached or otherwise chemically treated hair. Just spray this all over your head and kiss heat damage from styling tools goodbye. Despite all of my haphazard combing, bleaching and flat ironing, I am still damage-free—no split ends! Even though this spray isn’t necessarily designed to do it, I truly think it helps me to achieve straighter hair for longer than normal. The smell is really nice as well, so that’s a great added bonus. I simply love this product.

Coty

Airspun Loose Face Powder (in Translucent Extra Coverage)

After hearing nearly every beauty guru in the civilized world rant and rave over how awesome this powder is, I finally managed to find some of my own (curse all of my local stores for never carrying anything). I was in the market for a new setting powder anyway so I figured, “Why the heck not?” It’s really sad how obsessed I am with this stuff. I literally look for reasons to use it, even when I don’t need to. I seriously feel like a little girl playing in her mother’s makeup…only it’s mine.

I chose the extra coverage formula in hopes that it would keep my highlight looking flawless after baking—it works like a dream! The powder is super fine, so it blends into the skin like you never put anything on at all. It keeps my highlight and undereye concealer in place all day long. And unlike other “translucent” powders that end up being chalky and ghastly pale, this one truly is translucent. It comes with a cute little powder puff too, but I use my own.

One of my favorite things about this face powder is its smell. Some people are like, “OMG, it smells like old lady makeup!” It definitely smells like makeup from back in the day, but maybe that’s because it’s been around since 1935. I’m totally into its scent though. I always feel so glamorous putting it on because I can just imagine all of my favorite Old Hollywood actresses putting something like this on in their dressing rooms. A beauty product that smells great and actually works? Count me in.

Laura Mercier

Velour Puff

As close as I came to getting Laura Mercier’s setting powder (which is also highly treasured by fellow beauty lovers), Airspun won out. I did, however, pick up this new powder puff. Then again, it’s not so little. It’s the size of my entire cheek! I actually bought this for baking because I wanted to use something that would apply my loose powder quickly and evenly. I also wanted a puff that had a little strap for my fingers to slip through, so this was perfect.

At about 3 inches wide, this puff has plenty of surface area for picking up product. I used to have to continuously dip my beauty blender into my “baking powder”, but now I can give this a few quick pats and I’m good to go. I really like how soft and thick it is as well—it is highly cushioned! Coincidentally, it fits into the Airspun container perfectly, so that’s where mine lives.

Maybelline

The Colossal Big Shot Washable Mascara

I tend to like my lashes pitch black, thick, long and outrageous—the more drama the better. Over the years, I have tried a lot of different mascaras. Some have worked really well, while others have fallen flat. I’m at the stage in my makeup game where I’ve already found my tried and true favorites. I love them and they make my lashes look oh-so-amazing. However, you never know when you’ll come across the next best thing. This is why I was quick to try this mascara when my mom gave me a tube.

Meh.

I was hardly impressed. I dunno. Maybe I’m a complete weirdo. The ratings I’ve seen for this mascara make it seem like the Holy Grail for eyeballs, but I won’t be joining them in singing its praises. I really liked the look of the packaging (gold is always my thing). I wanted to love the formula as well, but I don’t. This stuff is supposed to plump up your eyelashes, giving you more volume. I truthfully can’t say it did much of anything for my lashes. Perhaps I got a lemon?

Overall, I found this to be a plain old waterproof mascara. I never could get my lashes super full and dark (as I typically prefer). Even when I tried building it up with additional coats, I didn’t get much outside of a little color on my lashes. This is probably okay if you have light eyelashes or want a little something without doing anything too transformative. However, if you are looking for a mascara to really accentuate the eyes and trick people into thinking you’re Bambi, this is probably not it.

The only thing that I like about this mascara is the fact that none of it transferred onto my undereye area throughout the day. My bottom lashes are a little long, so they tend to  sweep my undereye and get mascara places it doesn’t belong. I didn’t have a problem with that while using this mascara. However, I’m thinking it might have been due to not being able to get much product to stick to my lashes in the first place. Boo. I’ll give this one last try, but after that…I’m going to give up while this goes right into the trash bin.

Leighton Denny Expert Nails

Nail Polish (in Pillow Talk)

Here is another item I showed you guys in May’s Glossybox. When I wrote the unboxing I had only played with the polish a little bit. Since then, I have had the chance to paint my nails properly and really get a feel for it. Overall, I quite like this polish. It went on well, dried quickly and had good opacity. I did decide that it needed two coats for full coverage, but it almost could have gotten away with one.

I skipped out on my usual clear topcoat, but it honestly didn’t need it. It had reasonably good shine all on its own. The polish held up surprisingly well without it too. I was able to wear it five entire days before I saw even the slightest chip. Of course, once I noticed the first chip everything went downhill from there. All the same, I was really impressed by its wear-time. When I finally succumbed to the chipping and removed the polish, I had no trouble at all getting it to come off. Red-tinted polishes tend to be a headache to remove, but this one nearly jumped off my nails onto the cotton ball. No mess, no fuss and no staining.

As for the color, it’s really pretty, but much darker than I imagined it would be. After two coats, it had lost its pink tones. It turned into a deep cabernet shade. Though I cannot see myself using this again until fall, it’s a genuinely pretty color for the right season.

Crest 3D White Luxe

Glamorous White Toothpaste

To me, nothing makes a person more gorgeous than a killer smile, so I’ve always paid a lot of attention to the appearance of my teeth. I am complimented on them quite often, so I wanted to share one of my secrets for achieving an enviable white smile.

As you can see here, this tube is clinging on for dear life. I’m still trying to squeeze the last bit of product from it before opening my next box. 😀 Though I tend to alternate between this and another brand of whitening toothpaste (gotta catch those BOGO sales), I use this one the most often. It leaves my teeth bright white and minty fresh—what more could I ask for? Well, I do wish it addressed sensitive teeth like Sensodyne does. If it did, it would be the best toothpaste ever.

Not only does it keep my teeth healthy, but it prevents them from getting stained. I drink coffee and tea like I should drink water. Under normal circumstances, I’m sure my teeth should be stained beyond belief, but they couldn’t be further from it. When I last saw my dentist and mentioned that I was considering a whitening session he was like, “What? What for?!” Well, so I can blind everyone with their whiteness…duh. Can you believe he actually tried to dissuade me from giving him money for whitening “I don’t need”? Pfft. What an abomination, huh? But in all seriousness, I got what he was saying (even though I still want them as white as humanly possible). This toothpaste does an excellent job when it comes to fading and preventing surface stains. You definitely want this in your life. Your teeth and smile will thank you.

With the exception of a few things, this month’s GBB was very budget-friendly and convenient—just visit your local drugstore! The majority of these retail for under $10, while a few are right around the $20 mark. Though I have many high-end beauty products, I realize that I don’t use them nearly as often as some of my more affordable favorites. This really goes to show that you don’t have to spend a chunk of your paycheck to look and feel your best.

I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend! And for my non-US readers, I still hope you had a wonderful weekend as well. As for myself, I was super busy, but I absolutely loved the awesome weather. The past weekend’s festivities left me falling a bit behind on posts, but I promise to make it up to you in the upcoming weeks. There are many new things in store and I’m working on some fun surprises that I think you’ll really like. ‘Til next time, golden girls! ❤
